Organizations end up running both Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 for reasons that made sense at the time. An acquisition brings in an entity on a different platform. A business has grown from a Google-first startup and layered in Microsoft licensing as compliance or enterprise requirements increased. The result is an environment where identity, mail, and collaboration sit across two ecosystems that were not designed to share an organization, with all of the operational friction that creates.
Consolidation onto a single platform is the right long-term goal in almost every case, and migration from one to the other is an achievable outcome that we have delivered. Co-existence can also be operated well in the interim, but it carries costs that are worth being clear-eyed about. A heterogeneous environment is harder to audit, security policy is harder to apply consistently, and producing the evidence that compliance programs require becomes significantly more complex when it spans two systems that do not naturally align. Both getting to stable co-existence and getting to full consolidation are genuine wins, depending on where the organization is starting from.
The per-seat price comparison is misleading. Google Workspace is priced below Microsoft 365 at the base tier, but it does not include native device management, a native identity provider, or enterprise-grade audit and compliance features. Once those gaps are filled with supplementary tools, the platforms reach near cost parity. The decision becomes one of capability fit, not cost.
In a hybrid environment, the immediate operational priorities are identity and mail routing. Each platform has its own directory, and without a deliberate synchronization architecture, they diverge quietly until the inconsistencies show up in an access review or a leaver who still has access to systems they should not. Mail routing misconfiguration produces missed messages and frustrated senders. Calendar interoperability across the boundary needs specific configuration to work reliably.
Whether the goal is to consolidate or to operate the hybrid more effectively, the starting point is the same: a clear picture of what you have, where it is drifting, and what a realistic path forward looks like. The security and governance implications of a hybrid identity landscape are worth mapping early, before they surface as gaps in an audit or due diligence process.
